Springwood Livestock Management Services SHEEP: Reproductive Ultrasound

Ultrasounding Pregnancy Diagnosis

Pregnancy diagnosis in the ewe can be successfully accomplished from 25 days post-conception. This allows for marketing open ewes before late gestation feed costs are incurred. In ewe lambs it encourages the sale of ewes while they still qualify as lambs and command lamb prices as opposed to cull ewe prices.

Fetal Counts

Fetal Counts can be accurately diagnosed from 45 to 90 days fetal age. Fetal counts are 90% accurate when determining singles versus multiples;accuracy decreases as the size and age of fetus/es increases. The determination of fetal counts allows for more intensive management of the ewe flock, by separating ewes carrying singles from those carrying multiples. Ewes pregnant with multiples can be fed more and watched more closely to increase the survival of multiple pregnancies.
