Spotlight February 19, 2010

NAME: Macy Grace Perry

HOME STATE: Prather, CA

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SHOW AND WHY?
The National Junior Angus Show in any location, because it has a lot of fun activities besides just showing my cattle.  I usually do the fitting contest, public speaking and photo contest.  This year I participated in the mentoring program and got to meet people from everywhere in the United States.  It might also sound crazy but the trip getting there is always fun.  Living in California we always have to drive a long ways.  This past summer we went to Perry, Georgia and got to cross the whole United States.  It was over 6,500 miles round trip but worth it, it was a lot of fun.  We give up traditional family vacations to go each summer to the National Junior Angus Shows.  This summer it is in Denver, CO which will be fun but the following year it is in Harrisburg, PA.  I think we will have to buy a new truck for that trip.

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SHOW ACCOMPLISHMENT?I would probably have to say that winning the Supreme Champion Bull at the California State Fair, mostly due to the fact that I raised him out of one of my former show heifers, so he was a bred and owned.   Because of that win I was able to sell him to some people in the Midwest for a herd sire.  He also was Reserve in an open division back Louisville in November.

WHO IS YOUR BIGGEST INSPIRATION? My Mom and Dad, because they both work hard at their jobs but still have time for us kids.  They try to make everything possible for us to compete successfully and have fun at the same time.

WHAT IS A NORMAL DAILY ROUTINE FOR YOU? (SCHOOL, WORKING WITH ANIMALS, EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES)
During school days I get up at 5 am to be on time for school, when I get home I go out to the barn and tie up my cattle and fog them and work their hair prior to feeding.  I then feed and clean pens and get back in the house about 6 pm.  Then I eat dinner and do homework and go to bed.  On non school days I get up and feed then rinse/wash, blow the cattle and work hair for about half a day and then feed in the evening.  During the summer time I rinse twice a day to get ready for the NJAA and try to get hair growing again before the show.  Also at certain times of the year we might be halter breaking and working additional hours with babies that might be future show heifers.  It seems there is never a “normal” day.

WHO HAS HELPED YOU THE MOST WITH YOUR PROJECTS? My Mom, Dad and my two brothers.  Showing cattle is a family affair.  Mom helps me in the show barn, Dad helps me with my cows and calves, my brothers help out whenever I need it.  We try to do everything ourselves and do not hire help so it takes the entire family to work hard and have shared goals to be successful.  Because of this we get to spend a lot of time together and are very close.

WHAT IS THE ONE SHOW YOU HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO WIN AND WHY? I guess I would have to say I would love to win the National Junior Angus Show with either an owned or bred and owned.

WHAT IS YOR FAVORITE ANIMAL OF ALL TIME AND WHY? In the heifer division it would be Martha, she was one of my first show heifers and I won my first show and belt buckle with her, but as far as favorite of all times I would have to say my Corgie dog “Annie”.  She hardly ever leaves my side and is my best buddy.

IF YOU COULD HANG OUT WITH ONE PERSON AT A SHOW FOR A DAY WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?Probably Kirk Stierwalt.  I went to his camp this fall and had a great time and learned a lot.  I would love to learn more from him so I can keep getting better at grooming, fitting, and showing cattle.

WHO IS YOUR FAVORITE JUDGE AND WHY? I like all judges who are good on the mike and explain things well so I can understand how I can do better.
WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE PLANS?
I plan on keep showing cattle until I am too old in the junior shows. Next year in high school I plan on getting very involved with the Clovis FFA Chapter where my mom teaches and judge horses and livestock.  Following high school I would like to run for the Board of the National Junior Angus Association to give back and hope to inspire younger members to become involved in this great organization.  I also plan on going to college at Oklahoma State University and majoring in Agriculture.

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU WOULD RECOMMEND TO OHER EXHIBITORS?To set goals and then work really hard to achieve those goals, and when you do it feels really good!!!
